The Bridesmaid's Daughter: Grace Kelly, fashion & a lesson in mental health

Born in the relatively small town of Steubenville, Ohio, Carolyn Scott Reybold went from rags to riches-- to homeless.
How does a bridesmaid for Grace Kelly and famous model end up on the streets?

Her daughter explains in the book "The Bridesmaid's Daughter".
And I explain how I "accidentally" started a podcast because of this.

I first heard of Carolyn Reybold when I went to the Dean Martin festival for his 100th birthday celebration.
I decided to stop at the museum to see if there was a display about Martin. Of course, there was but the staff seemed to take a shining to me.
I was about the youngest person there that had visited from out of state and had not been dragged there by parents to see the birthplace of my beloved Dean Martin.
I was given a personal tour, as I politely listened to an older gentleman get excited about certain things he felt he was passing on, which indeed he was, I learned more from that small museum than I have at larger ones.
He stopped at a picture of Carolyn.

He said "do you know who she is?"

I of course, answered in the negative.

He said "she was the best friend of Grace Kelly and ended up homeless".
He said people in town had reached out to try to offer her help, but she had refused.
She had been apparently the "It" girl for awhile, being in countless magazines.
I wondered how her fate ended up that way, and how she spent the remainder of her days, as a homeless person.

I really did not have much time to ponder this, as the men had taken such a shining to me that they wanted to show me the wonders they had in the basement, something few saw apparently.

It was a model train set. It was quite something.

Fast forward a bit, about a year later, I forget Carolyn's name but remember her story. I tried to look up famous people from Ohio.
Nothing rings a bell.

Couple months later, I don't know why, probably telling someone about the Dean Martin experience (because at the job I was at they lightly teased about being too young to like Dean), I looked it up again.
I believe I searched "Ohio model Grace Kelly"
POOF
I found a book had been written about her.....by her daughter. Nyna Giles.

I message her daughter on the author's page, thinking it's managed by someone else.
My literal text was WAY early in the morning saying

Last year I went to the Steubenville museum visiting for The Dean Martin festival when The guide told me about Carolyn. Her name escaped me after I went home but her story did not. It took me awhile to find her, I kept looking through famous Ohioans and Steubenville residents but her name was not there. I plan on putting your book on my must reads. I am 24 and have started to make videos and hope to launch a few podcasts about famous people if the past, right now the audience is small but I would be happy to promote your book. Are there any other resources or websites that you know of that has pertinent information?

I was really only expecting to make a podcast explaining who Carolyn was, I did not expect the author to write back.

She gave me resources then said " I'd be happy to do your podcast anytime"

At this point, I had only done a couple of videos in a series of celebrities. I did not have a podcast yet.
I thought "Oh man, I guess I have a podcast now".

I told my friends and family about this model's story and said I had gotten an interview from the daughter and author of this book.
They were excited for me.
So here it is....

This podcast has been A LOT of work. And I've made literally 50 cents off it. That's it.
BUT I love the content.
To me, sharing stories of people who did amazing work, is worthwhile.
These people are amazing, and a part of our lives.
I don't want their impact, their lives, their works--forgotten.
Or thrown away as just the past by younger generations.
It may be black and white.
But it has value.
Your favorite things and people will slip from people's memories too.
Someday I may be talking about Ariana Grande or Tom Hanks.

1932-1962 Dance Project--a brief summary of about 3 decades

Recently in a dance class I am taking, we had to research two consecutive eras and find our information from a provided textbook. Each person in the group had a different task. I always love to be the one making a video if possible, so I had a visual aid. I also did a dance because even though this took about two hours to create, it is under five minutes so it looked like I did nothing. So I danced to the song "Ballin' the Jack" the Bob Crosby orchestra version. I explained to my peers that this song did have lyrics but I found it easier to dance to than the super slow Danny Kaye version or the sped up Gene Kelly and Judy Garland version I have from their movie For Me and My Gal .
However this clip includes snip its that are not in order. It has snip its of movies, famous people, famous orchestras, and it contains sections of radio programs, and songs. I also have included a snip it or two from movies and television. It is mainly to give a sense of the time, as I assume the point of the assignment was because otherwise we would just dance.

Dean's Steubenville

Dear Readers,
That's right Steubenville's in the news again, for that terrible reason. I did not comment on it before but I will now. When I first heard many months ago about the case, I immediately thought, "Oh no, not Steubenville!" I love that little town. (not too little but smaller than most the places I've moved to). It was right after I had decided that going to Steubenville was on my bucket list. I had read Deanna's book and found out about the Dean Martin Festival. Dean Martin may be one of my favorite performers (he ranks close with Gene, Fred, Johnny Carson, and Julie Andrews). Now Steubenville is in the national spotlight. I send my regrets that your town is probably getting a bad rap for this...My teacher is even making the class write about the case, but I intend on adding another source, to make sure that she knows that this little town is still a good town. Any town that produces Dean Martin, is perfect in my opinion.
Funny photo of pals staging a fight...This photo is in my room.

Going to Get a Pizza PIe

I ended up telling my English teacher friend about this story because it automatically became my favorite. How many long stories that people tell are memorable and hilarious? I mean seriously talk about a story for about 5 minutes and you remember every word almostish. Don't know if I've posted this before. Another fun fact-love the pizza "pie" reference. Love it when they used to call it a pie. Wish more people used it like a pie crust. Love pies. Pizza pies.

The Underworld

special channels. Just trust me....If you're a follower of my blog at all or I attend your blog, you may want to check this out.
We all have those movies we can't get our hands on, like at all, like on television, the store, or youtube. We want to be able to watch them before we dish out 20 bucks plus shipping to get it from amazon. Besides, not all of these older movies are prizewinners, you're just glad you watched them, and move on with your life, certainly never really promoting them...You save that for a time when the movie really matters to you because as any young person knows, getting your peers to care about something like this can be a really uphill battle. So you pick. these channels are THE channels (and some of their friends) that are able to help you decide whether to dish out cash or not. This blog is not that popular, nor do I care, I would actually not post this if it was, because let's just keep it to ourselves. These channels are amazing. Also when you get time...check out mine www.youtube.com/user/Oldtelivisionrocks

Dean Martin's music video

Dean Martin's one and only official music video. Everybody is commenting on it's somewhat distasteful style but I think you have to put it in context of the time period. It's not distasteful or really even vulgar or really anything. I mean just remember the music videos of the 1980's. WOW. Yuck. I mean some were standouts but many were just like, woah this guy must have been stoned or this makes no sense, it will not last because future generations cannot clip on to the style, people can clip on to a feeling or words or even timeless music styles. I mean orchestras have survived thus far. It was classy and cool. Maybe not in but high society. Anyway I liked it. It grew on me. At first I was like "oh yeah, it's not that great" along with everyone else but then, Dean always finds a way to get me to hum it so that I can't fight it for long. I'm compelled right back. I think you have to consider also that music videos for stars like him were just like the concept of the switch to televison was to radio announcers way back when ;) . Also, Dean was getting along in years and had a very successful career behind him and really had no need to do anything he wasn't up to. Just be happy bein' free!
It was a pioneering effort. Underappreciated. Maybe I feel that about alot of things....but then again maybe it's true. People don't see it, my job is to make them. Anyway thanks again for listening. (side note, for the record the most underappreciated film of all time is still Paris When it Sizzles)

I told you more What's My Line was coming.

I love Johnny Olson in this. He is great at the voices. They cannot figure out their own announcer!

I also love the dead giveaway videos. They are all comedians of  course that kind of bust in to reveal their identities. Love the cane with Burns and Allen, gotta love Gracie's dumb quip. Love Burn's response! I couldn't help but think that's why George would always make remarks about being the one that brought in the money with his act, moments like that I don't think George thought ever to write in...but it was sooo loveable. Then I also especially loved Martin and Lewis!!! Of course Jerry had to act stupid, with Jerry I find it obnoxious but I've always found it a kind of obnoxious...great comedian though. Liked Dean too pointing to himself wanting the attention saying me me, let me answer....But with Jerry's kidish nature in their shows, of course...Ernie Novacks.Dorthy's reaction with Mr. Cerf's.classic.
One of my favorite episodes though, is Jack Benny. Jack Benny never needed to say a joke in his life. He'd just watch a funny situation, look at the audience, the hilarity comes out with no joke about it. No need to make jokes or crack at people all the time, just look at the audience like they already get it.He also went up to kiss one of the panelist when she asks if he is handsome?!? Hilarious. Jack hits Daly...oh more hilarities, just watch it please.

Dean Martin

Here are some youtube videos I made and they tell alot about Dean Martin. If you want to know alot about what I know or are intrigued, read the suggested books....Dean and Me by Jerry Lewis or Memories are Made of This by his daughter. GO GO GO! (as Dean might say)

Just sharing some comedic partners Dean had. And some of his charm.
